Lecture Series - John Haney, Colorado Springs Trolley System
The Colorado Springs area was blessed by a streetcar system that was one of the best to be found anywhere. This had much to do with Winfield Scott Stratton who became owner of the Colorado Springs Rapid Transit Railway Company, and did great things with it. The PowerPoint presentation will cover the history of streetcar service pre- and post-Stratton, how it affected the lives of residents, and what became of it. We will also review what is going on presently in the trolley world and what we might imagine for the future.
About John Haney
John is a Colorado Springs native and his family has been here since the 1890s. His career was managing medical office buildings. He is married with two grown daughters and four grandchildren.
John’s fascination with streetcars goes back to a visit to Denver by train in 1950 when his father took him on the big yellow cars. Since then, he has visited dozens of trolley systems in this country and abroad. He graduated from Colorado College and has a Masters Degree in Urban Planning from the University of Arizona, which has helped him have a vision for how Colorado Springs could become a better city using streetcars. He is the remaining founding member of the Pikes Peak Trolley Museum & Restoration Shop, which preserves our local streetcar history. Talk to John about visiting and a tour!
John has co-authored three books on streetcar histories and has just released a beautiful coffee table, 254-page revision of Pikes Peak Trolleys, which you will want to consider purchasing after his presentation.
