History Lost & Found: The Search for Colorado’s Oldest Records
Years before Colorado became a U.S. Territory in 1861, settlers had been claiming land throughout the Pikes Peak region. Until recently, however, many of those original, pre-territorial land claim records were thought to have been lost to time. In this presentation, historian Larry Obermesik will explore the recent discovery and significance of the historic El Paso Claim Club record books, which reveal new information about the activities of some of Colorado’s already legendary founders.
Larry Obermesik is a retired IT manager turned historian, with a passion for uncovering Colorado’s oldest historical records. His research focuses on the earliest land claims settlers made in this region, and the little-known story of the state’s pre-territorial Claim Clubs, Land Associations, and Mining Districts.
