They ran
an inclusive, bipartisan campaign. Both Republicans
and Democrats voted for them, but in the end the
equine just couldn't beat the canine or the feline.
Considering the competition, Oro and Nugget's third
place finish for the Colorado Springs Convention
and Visitors Bureau's Mascot of the Year was very
respectable.
The
first place internet vote went to Chinook, the
Colorado Wolf & Wildlife Center's full-bred
wolf mascot. The Center's honorable education and
conservation mission, along with the wet nose and
wagging tail of thirteen-year-old Chinook was
tough, honest opposition. Second place went to
Prowler the Tiger - the Colorado College's Mascot.
After all, even though this is just an athletic
student in a silly suit (by the way
Prowler's
campaign manager admitted to running a smear
campaign!), CC is a historic and venerable
institution. Besides, their entire student body is
connected to the web!
The
museum's Burro Buddies who voted for Oro and Nugget
can hold their long ears high. The campaign brought
attention to WMMI for it's adoption of the donkeys
from the Bureau Land Management's Wild Horse and
Burro Program, in addition to the museum's
interactive, nonprofit educational mission (we even
have to feed some of our exhibits!). Oro and Nugget
did their job in representing the museum. You did
your job as good burro supporters in voting for
their candidacy (early and often, we hope!). And
remember
in politics, there is always next
year!
