At their
annual membership dinner, on December 2, 2004, the
Colorado Springs Convention and Visitors Bureau announced
that after a spirited election, the Museum's burros, Oro
and Nugget, received the necessary votes (both popular
and electoral) to be become the
2004
Mascot of the Year for
the Pikes Peak Region.
With their
characteristic humility and grace (after stepping on my
foot), Oro and Nugget requested that I express their
gratitude for the humbling support you provided in their
election victory. In short, they said:
"HEE-HAW!"
(For politicians, they are of few words.)
In attaining
this high office, Oro and Nugget virtually galloped over
the candidacies of many highly regarded contenders,
including: Prowler, representing Colorado College
Athletics, and Louie The Lightning Bug, who ran a
"shocking" campaign for the Colorado Springs Utilities.
The supporters of these candidates can be proud of their
efforts, but due to our great Members, and the burros'
admirers in the Museum's wider community, Oro and Nugget
were "long ears" ahead of the competition. Thanks once
again to those individuals and organizations (To name a
few: Longhopes Donkey Shelter, Glen Eagle
Sertoma, Lewis Palmer High School Serteens,
and Women in Mining) who voted to make the honor
of Pikes Peak Region Mascot of the Year a reality for our
burros.
As Oro and
Nugget will be establishing their administration and
selecting cabinet members, stop by and nominate yourself
for a position. Here's a hint: the top jobs are likely go
to those who bring ginger snaps to share.
