The Western Museum of Mining & Industry's
Mine Reclamation Exhibit Wins
Environmental Education Award!

The Western Museum of Mining & Industry proudly announces the outdoor exhibit, Mine Reclamation: New Life for Mined Lands and the Environment has been awarded the 2003 Environmental Education Award by the Colorado Department of Natural Resources' Mined Land Reclamation Board in cooperation with the Colorado Mining Association.

With this exhibit, WMMI emphasizes the importance of mine reclamation in the mining process. Restoring the land back to productive use during & after mining is an integral aspect of mining today.

In addition to exploring the environmental considerations of mine reclamation, individuals working in the field are depicted in life-size photographs. Digital technology enables visitors to hear these professionals speak about their roles in mine reclamation. This highlights a career-path sub theme for students considering careers in science and engineering.

Yule Marble
The Environmental Education Award is executed on marble from Colorado's Yule Marble Quarry. Reopened in 1990, this quarry dates to the late 1870's. The Yule Quarry has supplied marble for the exterior of the Lincoln Memorial and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. Known for producing some of the finest white marble in the world, the Yule Quarry produces marble comparable or higher in quality to the marble from Carrara, Italy.

Mine History Mural Wins Arts Award!

Mine Mural

A young museum visitor explores one of the interactive elements in WMMI's award-winning mural illustrating the history, and possible future, of mining in the American West.

On April 16, the Arts/Business/Education Consortium presented the Western Museum of Mining and Industry with its 2003 Unique Project in the Community Award for our "Making of a Mural" project. Each year, the A/B/E Consortium recognizes teachers, businesses, and community members who have contributed significantly to arts education in the Pikes Peak region. With this award, the group praised the collaboration among the museum, Colorado Council on the Arts, the Lewis-Palmer High School Arts Department and Manitou Springs artist, Steve Wood; as well as the 200-square-foot mining history mural now on permanent display in the museum's main lobby. This colorful, hands-on mural timeline is now an integral part of the museum's Colorado history programming for K-12 students and the visiting public.
